Recent Updates ________________________________________________ Update from Corey Morris on Retrieving the Acoustic Hydrophones October 2009 Corey's most recent trip to the Gilbert Bay MPA involved getting acoustic hydrophones. He stated that putting the data together will take some time, but it does indicate that many cod are spending considerable time outside the MPA as they expected, including an area of Alexis Bay. Having said that, they did not retrieve the receivers from the outside hydrophones yet, so the picture is incomplete.
A
couple weeks ago there was a scientific review of the Gilbert Bay
cod monitoring program, conducted by DFO. Scientists provided
a critique of the 5 monitoring indicators used to study trends in
the Gilbert Bay cod population, and suggested ways to improve the
current monitoring program. Corey stated it was a very positive science
review, and provided some excellent advice. All in all, the 5
existing monition indicators that make up the program are
useful. Some improvements were suggested, particularly in terms
of data analysis and data collection. This information will be
published in a DFO Science Advisory Report (general overview) and a
DFO Research Document (detailed description) during the coming
weeks.
Corey
stated that upcoming
work during the winter will include analysis and write-up of the
acoustic telemetry data. He is not sure if there will be
funding available to make a trip to the area during this winter,
but we (DFO and LMN) are interested in the winter location of Arctic
Char that we tagged last summer.
The
Arctic Char work is a collaboration between DFO science and the LMN.
They tagged Char within the MPA last summer and tracked their
movements. 6 of 25 Char tagged were caught. They also put sonic
receivers near the mouths of most brooks in the Gilbert Bay and
Alexis Bay area. This should give them an idea of which brooks the Char went into.
Corey stated it would be interesting to see if Char spend time in
the MPA during the summer, and also where they spend the winter
months.

Update on Sewage Outfall Monitoring
On September 17th, 2009 Laura Park, Marilyn Parr-Penney and Clayton Curl completed the Sewage Outfall Monitoring in William’s Harbour for another year. This regular check-up is done to ensure that the effluent is not so concentrated or toxic as to have a negative impact on the MPA. The monitoring includes visual examination and water sampling to determine levels of dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature. The results were great with no issues to report.

Announcements ________________________________________________ PUBLIC NOTICE The Gilbert Bay Steering Committee would like to remind those participating in the recreational and commercial cod fisheries this summer that it is very important for them to return any tags found in the cod they catch to the address printed on the tag and to include a note stating: the location where the fish was caught, as well as the length of the fish. The tags are positioned just below the dorsal fin as highlighted by the yellow circles in the pictures below. There is also a reward of $35.00 for any sonic tags that are returned. These tags are found in the body cavity of the fish. It is a 3 inch long cylinder that is black in color.
For those fishing in the vicinity of William’s Harbour and Port Hope Simpson, it would be greatly appreciated if you could contact Marilyn Parr-Penney at the address below if you capture any tagged Gilbert Bay cod, as we would like to measure these fish as well as remove their otoliths for study as part of the research being conducted on the Gilbert Bay cod population. It would also be appreciated if you could contact Marilyn regarding any untagged Gilbert Bay cod that are caught, as we would like to get measurements on and harvest the otoliths from these fish as well. Gilbert Bay cod are reddish brown in color and are genetically distinct from other Labrador cod. __________________________________________
