Gilbert Bay Steering Committee

 

A Gilbert Bay Steering Committee (GBSC) was established in 2001 to assist in the MPA consultative process for Gilbert Bay.  They have been an essential part of the overall process toward MPA designation.  The GBSC have gathered strong local support for the MPA.

 

 

The GBSC represents stakeholders within the area that have an interest in the resources and resource uses of Gilbert Bay.  The committee is made up of representatives from:

 

  • Municipal Governments

  • Aboriginal Groups (Labrador Metis Nation)

  • Tourism Industry

  • Fishing Industry

  • Academia (Memorial University of Newfoundland)

  • Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (ex-officio capacity)

  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada (ex-officio capacity)

 

 

 

 

The role of the committee is to:

 

  • represent key constituent groups or stakeholders;

  • provide advice to DFO and provincial government;

  • collate and analyse feedback from consultations and management proposals;

  • make consensus-based recommendations to DFO and the province for the management the Gilbert Bay MPA; and

  • ensure community involvement in the on-going management of the Gilbert Bay MPA
