Fish harvesters have long been advocates of management measures to ensure the sustainable future of the Gilbert Bay cod. Indeed, it was this sector that initially raised their concerns in the apparent decline of the resident cod population. They have provided valuable information and knowledge that has helped to focus scientific research.
Fishers have recognized the need to protect spawning cod and the habitats considered critical for the various life stages of cod. Support for the MPA among fish harvesters suggests that self-policing and compliance with the Regulations will be high.
