Labrador Métis Nation
The Labrador Métis are primarily of descent from Inuit women and British men and have occupied various reaches of the Labrador coast up to the Quebec north shore for generations. Traditionally, this aboriginal group followed a nomadic lifestyle, which is inherent in Inuit culture and based largely on seasonal hunting, fishing and trapping.
The Labrador Métis Nation (LMN) represents the majority of local stakeholders with an interest in the Gilbert Bay MPA. Métis involvement in the Gilbert Bay MPA designation process began from the beginning. The LMN have contributed considerably to scientific research and understanding of the Gilbert Bay ecosystem. They have also acted in an advisory role in the development of the management plan. The LMN have a meaningful voice and role in the management given their close association with the land and sea, as well as their vast traditional knowledge of the area.
