Update from Corey Morris on Retrieving
the Acoustic Hydrophones October 2009
Corey's
most recent trip to the Gilbert Bay
MPA involved getting acoustic hydrophones. He stated that putting the
data together will take some time, but it does indicate that many
cod are spending considerable time outside the MPA as they expected,
including an area of Alexis Bay. Having said that, they did not
retrieve the
receivers from the outside hydrophones yet, so the picture is
incomplete.
A
couple weeks ago there was a scientific review of the Gilbert Bay
cod monitoring program, conducted by DFO. Scientists provided
a critique of the 5 monitoring indicators used to study trends in
the Gilbert Bay cod population, and suggested ways to improve the
current monitoring program. Corey stated it was a very positive science
review, and provided some excellent advice. All in all, the 5
existing monition indicators that make up the program are
useful. Some improvements were suggested, particularly in terms
of data analysis and data collection. This information will be
published in a DFO Science Advisory Report (general overview) and a
DFO Research Document (detailed description) during the coming
weeks.
Corey
stated that upcoming
work during the winter will include analysis and write-up of the
acoustic telemetry data. He is not sure if there will be
funding available to make a trip to the area during this winter,
but we (DFO and LMN) are interested in the winter location of Arctic
Char that we tagged last summer.
The
Arctic Char work is a collaboration between DFO science and the LMN.
They tagged Char within the MPA last summer and tracked their
movements. 6 of 25 Char tagged were caught. They also put sonic
receivers near the mouths of most brooks in the Gilbert Bay and
Alexis Bay area. This should give them an idea of which brooks the Char went into.
Corey stated it would be interesting to see if Char spend time in
the MPA during the summer, and also where they spend the winter
months.

Update on Sewage Outfall Monitoring
On September 17th, 2009 Laura Park, Marilyn Parr-Penney
and Clayton Curl completed the Sewage Outfall Monitoring in William’s
Harbour for another year. This regular check-up is done to ensure that the
effluent is not so concentrated or toxic as to have a negative impact on the
MPA. The monitoring includes visual examination and water sampling to
determine levels of dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and
temperature. The results were great with no issues to report.

Through
the collaboration process between DFO and
Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN),
considerable information about the Gilbert Bay cod and its ecosystem has
been compiled. This information has proven quite useful in the development
of the Gilbert Bay MPA, as well as in the development of this website. The strong commitment from both parties on continued
research pertaining to the conservation, protection and ecological
understanding of the MPA will lead to effective management of the area.
